How May Pairs of Shoes Do You Need?

If you need another pair of shoes (or want to get rid of some!) check out the Comox Valley’s first Community Garage Sale!  Saturday October 18th at the Filberg Centre.  Call 338.5371 FMI.

Imagine a sarong that doubles as a room divider.  A pair of sandals made from an old tire.   Imagine having no other clothes than the ones on your back.  That was the reality of most of the Luo people in western Kenya when Alison Roberts volunteered there in 1994.

For an educated, white, middle class woman from Toronto, the culture shock was severe.  But after four months of volunteering in a remote fishing village, Alison came to realize that sometimes, people who have the least can be the most resourceful, generous and welcoming of all.

Since returning to Canada, Alison has shrugged off the materialistic lifestyle that is so prevalent in North America.  She became an advertising critic and after years of de-cluttering, realized that her life was infinitely more satisfying when she stopped caring about “keeping up with the Joneses”.

Want to get rid of some of your excess?  Looking for something you need?  Check out the Community Garage Sale on Saturday October 18th from 9:00am-2:00pm.  Tables will be set up in the Rotary Hall of the Florence Filberg Centre and the shredding of personal documents will be available by donation.

Proceeds from the shredding, the sale of World Community Fair Trade products and Roberts’ book, Clutter’s Dirty Secret, will go directly to support orphans in Kakemega, Kenya.
